So far, we've been on the road 6 days and covered 392 miles. This is more than we planned, but necessary because of the distance between places to stay. Now we have arrived in Colorado, there are more green spaces and places to stop.
We started the day with a hearty breakfast at Brenda's Old West Cafe in Cortez. It's always kind of odd to walk into a local establishment wearing lycra among all the locals in their cowboy hats in work boots. Nevertheless, we are treated well and always have great food.
Our next stop was the shipping store. I am embarrassed to admit that I filled a box with 14 pounds of extra gear and shipped it home. You think after 14000 miles on a bike I would know how to pack.
It was a good thing that I dropped the weight. We had a long day with lots of long climbs. We were rewarded with nice tailwinds and fabulous views. On the ride into Durango we went 9 miles without having to turn a pedal.
As always, there was payback. The ride from Durango to our campsite was a 600' gain in elevation. We arrived at the campsite in time to have a piece of pie 🥧 served by the campground.
With an early start, after a good night's sleep, we headed down the road to Bayfield Colorado. There we found another local restaurant where I had lemon meringue French toast for breakfast. Rob and Derald had equally hearty meals.
As you can see from the map, it was another day of up and down riding. What you can't see is a huge tailwind 🌬
Today we have a day off in Pagosa Springs. We are resting our legs ( and our backsides) as we contemplate our 4000' climb up to Wolf Creek Pass tomorrow.
You guys are so gutsy! Love the blog.
